Health and Safety and the Control of Asbestos

As you may be aware, under the Health and Safety at work Act 1974 and the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations all employers must identify and manage asbestos materials in their premises.

Asbestos is hazardous. The failure to identify asbestos hazards in premises is a common cause of asbestos exposure and is increasingly resulting in prosecution.

In order to meet the requirements of the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, risk assessments, condition monitoring and cautious management should be undertaken.

When materials containing asbestos are disturbed they produce microscopic fibres which if inhaled can cause some of the following diseases.

  • Lung cancer
  • Mesothelioma
(cancer of the lining of the chest cavity). Mesothelioma may result from just a brief exposure to asbestos dust.
  • Asbestosis
    (hardening of the lung tissue).
