Road firm in dock over stop-go Man's death
26th Feb, 2006 to 26th May, 2006
Balfour Beatty were fined a total of £60,000 and order to pay £45,000 costs at Wolverhampton Crown Court in November, after pleading guilty to a breach of Section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The case was brought following the death of employee Stephen Haywood during construction of the Nesscliffe Bypass in Shropshire on 4 October 2002.Traffic control was needed while an anti-skid surface was being applied on the A5. Mr Haywood was operating a ‘stop-go’ board from an island in the road when he was struck by a heavy goods vehicle and killed.
Speaking after the case, Katherine Walker, said: “This incident is one that could have easily been avoided. It is a sobering reminder of the dangers that exist during roadworks. Employers must carry out risk assessments and take proper precautions to protect their workers from oncoming vehicles when involved in temporary traffic works.”
